Brewing Shift Manager, Molson Coors. Worshipful Company of Brewers Award for the General Certificate in Brewing in 2024.
Rhoda Duncan
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your current role?
I am currently working as a brewing shift manager - leading a team of technicians that run brewhouse, fermentation and yeast operations.
What path led you into the drinks industry, and what drew you to the role you’re in now?
I studied a master’s in chemistry and chemical engineering at the University of Strathclyde, I really enjoyed my course, but I did not have any idea what I wanted to do after it. During my penultimate year I got an opportunity to complete an internship at a food manufacturing site and really enjoyed the manufacturing environment. Brewing really appealed to me as there is a great balance of science and process engineering. I joined Molson Coors on their graduate programme, allowing me to experience different sites and areas of the business.
This was a great way to understand the industry better and trial different roles.
What are you currently working towards or enjoying most in your role?
The thing that I enjoy most is that there is constant opportunity to learn. Sometimes this is from working through complex problems but most of the time this is from my colleagues. I am very fortunate that the team I work in are very supportive and always willing to share their knowledge and experience with me.
Is there something you’ve learned so far - about the industry or about yourself - that you didn’t expect when you started?
I did not appreciate the complexity of the industry & beer is now my drink of choice!
Is there anything you’d like to share with other women considering a career in the drinks industry? Or any final thoughts you’d like to share?
Go for it! There is a huge variety of roles within the industry- reach out to people and find out which opportunities align with your skills, values and interests.
